What is the H = S + C + V happiness formula and where does the leverage actually sit?

Happiness equals set point plus conditions plus voluntary activities. Set point is the baseline you were born with, partly genetic, partly fixed early. Conditions are life circumstances: some uncontrollable like age or family of origin, others partially under your control like income, location, marital status, friend group. Voluntary activities are the choices you make about how to spend your time and attention. The set point is hard to move. The conditions can be improved at the margin but often resist quick change. The leverage lives in voluntary activities. They are the part of the formula where deliberate effort produces actual gain. Exercise, meditation, skill learning, social engagement, vacation experiences over consumer purchases. None of these requires waiting. None of them depends on outside permission. A dentist who wants to be measurably happier in twelve months works the V column. The S is fixed. The C is slow. The V responds immediately.
