Why does running over on one dental consultation taint every consultation that follows on the same day?
Because stress from one consultation does not stay contained, and patients in subsequent consultations can sense it from the moment they meet the doctor. When a previous consultation runs long, the doctor walks into the next one already trying to catch up. The pace is off. The attention is divided between the patient in the room and the schedule behind. Small signals leak through: rushed transitions, abbreviated questions, less eye contact, body language that signals time pressure. The patient does not consciously diagnose what is wrong, but they register the difference between this consultation and what they expected. Trust drops. Engagement drops. The clinical recommendation lands less effectively. Multiplied across an afternoon, one runaway consultation can degrade the next two or three substantially. The fix is upstream. Protect the consultation blocks rigorously. Reschedule patients who arrive unprepared. Keep the doctor’s presence calm and unhurried for every consultation that does happen.
If the answers you are finding here resonate with you, my team and I work with a small group of clients each year. The next step is a complimentary Discovery Consultation and Practice Review with Dr. McAnally.
