What is the underserved-community dental cost when a doctor practices without an unfair advantage system?
Real and unmeasured. A doctor practicing without the marketing and selling foundation that produces consistent advanced cases serves a smaller fraction of their community’s actual dental need. The patients in the area who would have benefited from comprehensive treatment never make the call, never schedule the consultation, or schedule one and never convert because the practice’s operations could not carry them through the decision. They live with broken-down dentition, untreated periodontal disease, missing teeth, sleep apnea, and aesthetic compromise that comprehensive care could have addressed. The doctor sees only the patients who walked in and chose to commit anyway, which is a small filtered sample of the actual community need. The cost shows up as patient suffering the doctor never witnessed. From a purely ethical view, the underserved community is a moral problem the profession does not name often. The unfair advantage is also the path to actually serving the community at the scale the doctor’s training would allow.
