Roughly how many dentists are actually capable of delivering complex full-arch and reconstructive cases?
Informal estimates put the number in the United States at 5,000 to 10,000 providers across all specialties combined. The figure comes from nonscientific polling of generalists, oral surgeons, periodontists, endodontists, and prosthodontists about how many of their peers can actually deliver the full scope of complex case work: multi-implant placement and restoration, hard and soft tissue grafting, periodontal stabilization, fixed prosthodontics, occlusal reconstruction at proper vertical dimension, sometimes orthodontic alignment, and the sedation infrastructure to support extended appointments. Most general practices do not have the equipment, the training, the team, or the workflow for this category of case. Most specialty practices handle one slice of the work and refer the rest. The doctors who can deliver the entire complex case, whether as a highly trained single practitioner or through a coordinated team, are a small fraction of the roughly 200,000 active US dentists. Against a population of 21 million completely edentulous adults, plus tens of millions more with partial edentulism, the supply is dwarfed by the need.
