Should complex dental cases be delivered by a single highly-trained doctor or a coordinated team approach?
Both approaches work, and the choice between them is operational rather than clinical. A single highly-trained doctor, whether positioned as a super-generalist with extensive post-graduate training, a surgical prosthodontist, or a restoring periodontist, can deliver the complete complex case under one roof with continuous oversight. A coordinated team approach distributes the work across specialists: oral surgeon for placements and grafts, periodontist for tissue stabilization, prosthodontist for final restorations, with general practice oversight tying the sequence together. Each path has tradeoffs. The single-doctor approach offers continuity, single accountability, and a unified patient experience. The team approach allows each specialist to operate at peak clinical capability without dilution. Neither is intrinsically right or wrong. The debate often spirals into professional politics about who controls the patient relationship and the fee allocation. Those concerns are real but secondary to whether the patient receives competent comprehensive care. Practices should choose the path that matches their team, their training, and their market, then execute it with discipline.
