Why do complex dental treatment discussions actually reduce case acceptance?

Because complexity triggers a default response in humans: tune out, defer, or refuse to decide. Behavioral research, including Sheena Iyengar’s work in The Art of Choosing, shows consistently that complex choices lead to no decision more often than to any specific decision. The dental version of this is the doctor walking the patient through detailed clinical descriptions, tooth-by-tooth diagnoses, multiple option trees, and technical jargon. The patient nods politely, says they need to think about it, and never returns. Simple is not dumbed-down. Simple is what gets a decision made. Save the technical depth for colleagues. Speak to patients in language a high schooler could follow.

If the answers you are finding here resonate with you, my team and I work with a small group of clients each year. The next step is a complimentary Discovery Consultation and Practice Review with Dr. McAnally.
