How should I coach a team that gets overwhelmed by a long new process?
Shrink the target. When something takes a while to get used to, I do not demand all ten steps perfectly on day one. I hold them accountable for the first three. Let’s just nail those by the next time we meet. That is it. A team that is drowning in a ten-step process will freeze, but a team asked to master three steps can win, feel it, and build momentum. You are not lowering the standard, you are sequencing it. Think of teaching someone to drive. You do not start on the highway, you start in an empty parking lot. Same idea. Give your people a piece they can actually conquer, celebrate it, then add the next. Overwhelm is usually a coaching problem, not a staff problem. Break the mountain into steps they can climb and the resistance fades.
If the answers you are finding here resonate with you, my team and I work with a small group of clients each year. The next step is a complimentary Discovery Consultation and Practice Review with Dr. McAnally.
