How much time should pass between the dental consultation and the diagnostic visit?

At least a few days to a week. The interval allows the patient to process what was discussed at the consultation, share it with their spouse or family, raise any concerns that surfaced afterward, and arrive at the diagnostic visit with clearer intent. Diagnostic visits that follow the consultation by hours or the next day often produce shallow patient engagement because the patient has not had time to internalize the first visit’s content. The interval also lets the practice prepare the diagnostic visit more carefully. Required imaging, special instruments, or any pre-work that benefits from preparation gets done properly. The doctor walks into the diagnostic with the consultation notes fresh and the patient’s specific situation in mind. Cramming the consultation and diagnostic together into one super-visit degrades both. Some doctors believe combining them serves the patient by reducing trips. The data shows the opposite. The space between visits is where reflective decision-making happens. Protect it.
