What does the Prada versus Walmart handbag example teach a dental practice about market positioning?
That positioning sets the price the market will accept, regardless of the underlying product. A leather handbag at Walmart will not sell at thousands of dollars no matter how good the leather is. The same handbag in a Prada store at the same price feels appropriate to the buyer. The positioning, the context, the brand surroundings, the rest of the experience, all do the heavy lifting on price acceptance. Dental practices work the same way. A practice positioned in the market as a premium provider of advanced care can sustain fees that a generically positioned practice cannot, even with identical clinical outcomes. The positioning is built through everything around the clinical work: the physical environment, the marketing materials, the website, the way calls are answered, the consultation experience, the reputation in the community. Practices that want premium fees have to build premium positioning. Charging premium prices from a generic position produces empty schedules.
