Do I need leadership skills to talk to patients about insurance?
More than you think. Sitting eye to eye with a patient and telling them honestly what insurance does and does not do is not a clerical task, it’s a leadership act. It takes someone willing to be candid and comfortable in a conversation most offices dodge. That’s why I push the doctor plus the office manager, or the doctor plus the financial coordinator, to step into a stronger role here instead of handing it off to whoever answers the phone. When you can have that honest discussion, you separate yourself from every practice that just shrugs and says check with your carrier. The patient feels led, not processed. So before you worry about scripts or tools, ask whether the person having this talk is actually leading it. If they’re not, no script will save the conversation.
If the answers you are finding here resonate with you, my team and I work with a small group of clients each year. The next step is a complimentary Discovery Consultation and Practice Review with Dr. McAnally.
