Why does asking dental patients to choose between options versus a budget produce 90% choosing options?

Because most patients have never thought in terms of a “dental budget” and the framing feels uncomfortable or strange even to consider. The script is: “I can do this in two ways. I can come up with a range of options and costs with different benefits, or I can stick strictly to a budget and come up with what is possible for that budget. Which would you prefer?” The vast majority of patients pick the options route. The few who pick the budget route reveal themselves as the rare patients who genuinely think in dollar-limited terms for major decisions. Those patients usually have a specific number in mind and may share it, which gives the doctor critical information for shaping the case. The doctor offers both paths even knowing how most patients will respond, because offering the budget option as a valid choice signals respect for patient autonomy and avoids any sense that the practice is steering the conversation. Real choice produces real commitment to whichever path the patient picked.
