What is the distinction between dental treatment presentation and dental treatment consent?

Two different conversations that happen at different points in the case acceptance and treatment journey, and conflating them produces problems on both ends. The treatment presentation is the discussion where the doctor walks the patient through the diagnostic findings, the recommended treatment options, the corresponding fees, and the patient’s expectations during treatment. The focus is on getting to yes through clear communication of what the work involves and what it costs. The treatment consent is the legal and clinical discussion that happens after the patient has said yes, after a deposit is down, and after the case is going forward. The consent covers the specific risks of the procedures, the rare but real complications that can occur, the legal acknowledgments the patient signs, and the surprise-prevention documents that protect the relationship through treatment. Mixing the two muddies both. A treatment presentation that veers into worst-case complication territory frightens patients out of treatment. A consent process that skips the substantive risk discussion creates legal exposure later. Keep them separate, run them in sequence, and complete each one properly.
