Why does employee training matter more in higher-end purchase contexts than in lower-end retail?

Because as the price goes up, the buyer relies more heavily on the salesperson’s expertise to justify the spend. At a low-end retailer the customer expects to find their own item and check out fast. The employee is not expected to explain anything in depth. At a middle or higher-end store, the expectation flips. The customer wants the employee to be knowledgeable, to answer real questions, to recommend based on the customer’s actual needs, and to confirm the purchase decision feels right. Dental practices are firmly in the higher-end category for most of what they do. Patients are committing significant money to outcomes they cannot evaluate themselves. They lean on the team for confidence. A team that has been trained to explain procedures clearly, address concerns, and walk patients through tradeoffs converts at much higher rates than a team that is technically competent but unprepared for the conversation. Training is not optional in this category.
