How does “OPM” or other people’s money actually fund dental cases for Type 3 patients?
Through several mainstream financing paths that put substantial sums within reach of patients who otherwise could not write a single check. Home equity loans have historically been one of the largest sources, allowing homeowners to tap accumulated property value at relatively favorable rates to fund major treatment. Tighter post-recession lending standards have temporarily reduced this channel for some patients but it remains viable for many. Personal lines of credit and unsecured medical financing products like CareCredit and similar specialty lenders cover a substantial range of mid-sized cases. Some patients have access to retirement account distributions either through reaching the eligible age or through specific provisions allowing early withdrawal. Family lending, where parents or adult children fund treatment, accounts for more cases than most practices recognize. The patient who could not write a $40,000 check often has access to one or more of these financing paths and simply has not thought through the combination. A well-structured financial coordinator conversation surfaces the options. Borrowing for the right kind of dental work is a reasonable financial decision for many patients.
