Why are excessive patient complaints about prior dentists such a reliable predictor of future complaints?

Because the pattern reveals more about the patient than about the prior dentists. A patient who arrives at a new consultation cataloguing extensive grievances against every previous dental provider they have seen is signaling several things at once. They may have unrealistic expectations that no professional can meet. They may interpret normal communication or treatment friction as personal slights. They may have a personality that prefers to externalize blame rather than examine their own role. They may be litigious or quick to file complaints. The pattern that produced complaints against three prior dentists will produce a complaint against this practice too, unless something specifically intervenes. The honest response is to document the observation during the CDP, weigh it in the case-acceptance decision, and either decline the case, build extra time and communication safeguards into the treatment plan, or adjust the fee to compensate for the predicted headaches. Some doctors take these patients on with eyes open. Many decline. Either choice is defensible. Going in blind is not.
