Why should a dentist leave the room during part of the case presentation?
Because your white coat raises the patient’s blood pressure, literally. The British Journal of General Practice looked at a thousand patients and found readings jumped about ten systolic points and five diastolic points simply because the doctor was in the room. That is the white coat effect, and anxiety is the last thing you want while someone weighs a big decision. So I build a step where the patient and financial other watch a problems presentation on their own, no doctor present. They relax, they absorb their situation, and they start picturing what is possible without you hovering over them. Then you walk in for the clinical part. Think of it like a movie trailer that plays before the director takes the stage. Stop assuming your presence always helps. Sometimes the smartest move is to step out.
